Overrated and Underrated Nutrition and Health Habits

Overrated and Underrated

Coffee - Overrated. Whilst caffeine is a very effective tool in increasing exercise and mental performance, it is a stimulant that is overused by most people. It is often used to cover a deeper issue like poor rest and sleep. So fixing that will yield more benefits than increasing your daily coffee shots to 6 or beyond.

Sleep - Underrated. What does the 30-60 minutes before you go to sleep look like? Sacrificing that final daily hustle or netflix episode for an effective winding down routine will more than likely see you gain those minutes back in productivity the next day by improving sleep quality. Also aim to finish your last meal at least 60mins before sleep. This is an area I’m working on at the moment to get it out to 2hrs.

Nutrient dense meals - Underrated. Higher volume meals or a wider variety of real foods at set meal times will lead to feeling more satisfied after each meal thus not constantly reaching for the delicious treats. Aim for at least 30g protein in each main meal.

Health bars and balls - Overrated. Whilst they can be good alternatives for those with dairy/other allergen issues, I strongly advocate for learning to fit the chocolate bar or ice cream that you actually enjoy into your diet whilst still remaining within your calorie range needed to achieve your goals. This method is far more sustainable and leads to a healthier relationship with food.

Scrolling and eating - Overrated. Distracted eating is only really useful if you are trying to gain weight. You are overloading yourself with stimulii and not even consciously enjoying the food you are eating. Put the phone down for 10 minutes, give the eyes and brain a break and give your body a chance at enjoying a meal. That 10 minute break in ‘productivity’ may just be the secret creative juice your brain needed that day.

If possible eat in an environment opposite to that of which you spend most of your day in. Office worker = eat outside. Outside worker = eat inside. This will help give the body a break and put it in a better state to enjoy a meal.
